This week, to celebrate and recognise the Feast Day of Saint Mary MacKillop, our college was blessed with a visit from Sister Catherine Mead, a Sister of Saint Joseph based in Adelaide. I feel that Sister Catherine’s visit was a meaningful way to honour the legacy of Mary MacKillop, and to provide a spiritual presence for our Josephite community. Her presence has brought warmth and wisdom to our community.
Throughout the week, Sister Catherine has engaged with students and staff and was glowing in her appraisal of our community and the beauty of our young people.
Her gift to me though was the gift of presence. I was able to show her all areas of the college, and in the process get away from the desk and spend time talking about our successes and seeking her advice (she has a rich pedigree of school Principalship and educational leadership) where we’d like to improve. Thank you so much to Sr Catherine for taking the time to be with us.
Thank you also to members of the College community who have supported our Feast Day celebrations and have added to our fundraising efforts. The Leadership Forums normally clash with 8 August, and this is the first Feast Day I have been able to attend since 2019. I am so happy to have been a part of it. I am very much looking forward to the Foundation Day celebrations on Sunday and welcoming back our Alumni.
I hope you are well and enjoying the warmer weather. Happy Feast Day!

Deputy Principal's Report
Remember to look outside
Hello friends. I am writing this article from my office on site at Mary Mac – a place I have not seen that much of in the last 10 days. I spent two days in Brisbane working on the 2026 timetable with our consultant Matthew at Timetabling Solutions. Then a day at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod with students from Year 1 through to Year 9. This was followed by our Bishop’s Inservice Day at St. Mary’s where we played ‘host’ on someone else’s turf, and I ended up giving a vote of thanks speech which was not on my agenda when I woke that day!
Each of these excursions gave me a unique perspective about our college, our staff and our students and although escaping the ‘bubble’ of everyday school life brings its challenges, these have all been positive and affirming experiences.
My days timetabling for 2026 highlighted the incredible growth of the College and when I talk of growth, I do so from more than one standpoint. Yes, we are literally growing in numbers. This means more staff needed, more rooms needed and a plan regarding a curriculum that meets the needs of our students but also aligns with the requirements set out by Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB ) and Toowoomba Catholic Schools (TCS). Although the above has and continues to give me headaches, nightmares and probably raised blood pressure, it also brings me great pride and satisfaction. It’s a great position to be in to be stressing about rooming, staffing and curriculum, when it is with increased enrolments – it means you are doing something right and the community can see it. I know we are far from perfect, but we are working hard every day to make this the ‘College of choice’ for the local region and with robust conversations happening as a result of ‘dummying’ the 2026 timetable, we are already working tooth and nail to get high quality staff in for January; have our new Penola build operational, and have as many subjects running as possible to enable diversification and a range of pathways.
Rehearsing for and performing at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod is a real joy – yes even if the sessions last for 4-5 hours! It’s such a privilege to ‘show off’ the brilliant students at Mary MacKillop Catholic College and lock horns with the likes of Glennie, Fairholme and TGS. I know that the guitarists more than held their own during the week and my drama students really came to the fore which was so uplifting. Our Year 1 pair scored a silver medal as did our Year 3 Mime Group which was a great result. Year 3 went one better in their dramatisation of a poem, taking away the top prize as did our Year 7-9 group who scored a whopping 90/100 for their dramatic scene from ‘A Memory of Lizzie’. Again, the pride at being a ‘Mary MacKa’ was writ large across my smile but more importantly on the faces of the parents and students who were rightly proud of their achievement and effort.
Lastly, our Bishop’s Inservice Day really showcased MMCC within the Diocese and raised the bar for future host schools (at least I think so!). Bedecked in beautiful maroon scarves, the Mary Mac team welcomed, poured tea, stocked toilets, helped people to their seats, schmoozed with dignitaries, directed, tidied up, made announcements, hosted, emceed, performed at various times in various guises with various people, drummed, sang, screeched, strummed, delivered food packages, parked, told people NOT to park, gave speeches and received two massive concrete feet. What a day! Again, pride was my overwhelming feeling. I was proud of my colleagues; I was proud of being in TCS and I was super proud of our students who gave up their ‘free’ day for the benefit of others.
All of this reminds me that ‘looking out’ can sometimes be incredibly powerful. We can often become ‘institutionalised’ or ‘stuck in a bubble’ when we only look inwardly – we either criticise ourselves too harshly or we give ourselves too much credit as we have no frame of reference, nothing to compare ourselves against. These last ten days has renewed my enthusiasm to keep looking in, out, and beyond so that I can play my part in keeping our College grounded but also giving it the opportunity to spread its wings at the same time.

Staff Profile: Holly Anlezark
Your official role at the College:
Sports Administration Officer
What does a typical day really look like:
Each day in my role brings something new. I work both in the office and out at sporting events, depending on what’s happening in our school’s sports calendar. My responsibilities are wide-ranging and always focused on supporting students and helping our programs run smoothly.
Some of the key tasks I manage include:
Coordinating sports nominations and registrations Organising transport and accommodation for events Supporting students in signing up for new sporting opportunities Communicating with staff, students and external providers Ensuring all logistics are in place for a successful sporting experience Whether it's planning behind the scenes or being present at events, I’m involved in most aspects of school sport. My goal is to make sure students have positive, well-organised and enriching experiences through sport - and I’m proud to play a part in that.
Secondary School attended:
I attended Mary MacKillop Catholic College from Year 2 through to Year 9, where I developed a strong foundation in both academics and extracurricular involvement. I later completed my senior schooling at The Glennie School, graduating in Year 12. My time at both schools helped shape my passion for sport and student engagement, which continues to guide my work today.
What do you like about working at Mary MacKillop?
I really enjoy working at Mary MacKillop Catholic College because the school offers so many opportunities for students to get involved in sport and other activities. There’s a strong sense of community and support - everyone is willing to give things a go and put in their best effort. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that’s so committed to creating positive experiences for students and I feel proud to contribute to that environment every day.
What are your hobbies/Interests?
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and exploring creative passions. I run a small business called By Holly Jayne, which allows me to express my entrepreneurial side. I also love playing touch football and rugby 7s - team sports have always been a big part of my life. Recently, I’ve taken on a new challenge and started training for a half marathon, which has been both rewarding and motivating.
Other interesting facts about yourself or anything else you would like to share with the MMCC community:
During my time at Mary MacKillop, I was selected for the Australian Rugby 7s team in Year 9. This opportunity took me all the way to France, where I competed in the Paris World Games. It was an unforgettable experience that deepened my love for sport and taught me so much about teamwork, resilience and representing the amazing teams that lead you into these opportunities.
How is your work related to the 6 Ps?
In my role, I see the 6 Ps come to life every day. I’m passionate about creating possibilities for students through sport, encouraging them to show perseverance in every challenge and supporting them with a spirit of prayer and reflection. Everything I do is built on partnership - working closely with staff, students and families - and driven by practical action to make sure events run smoothly. Most of all, I bring passion to my work because I truly believe in the power of sport to shape confident, connected young people.

Power Up Maths Night: A Heroic Equation of Fun and Learning!
They arrived in masks and capes, ready for adventure — and left with more than just superpowers. Power Up Maths Night was no ordinary evening; it was a city-saving quest that merged creativity, courage and curriculum into one unforgettable mission.
From entering the Superhero Training Academy, to facing off against math-themed villains, students pledged to become the best superheroes they could be. Their missions were nothing short of epic:
🧠Using detective skills to crack math mysteries ⏱️ Racing against time to stop imaginary bombs 🏗️ Rebuilding the city with measurement and geometry 🐛 Repairing caterpillars using problem-solving superpowers 👓 Rescuing heroes with laser vision logic 🐸 Protecting frog ponds alongside Gran 💰 Returning stolen gold to the bank through strategic calculations 🧮 Feeding monster villains with Number knowledge 🏰 Battling for the tallest tower using algebraic thinking ✨ Growing magical math powers to defeat challenges
By the end of the night, every young learner had earned the title of Superhero Graduate. Each received a certificate and a goodie bag filled with take-home activities designed to keep their powers sharp and minds agile.
A special thanks goes to the PEN for their support and to Tenille Dyne and Shayne Cleary for championing the College’s Teaching and Learning initiatives. Shayne’s generous Lucky Door Prize brought an extra sparkle of joy to the event - congratulations to Archy on the win! And hats off to the Dyne family for sponsoring the colouring-in competition, with Amelia's entry taking the crown.
Power Up Math's Night proved that learning can be immersive, exhilarating and inspiring. It’s not always about pen and paper - sometimes it’s about capes, courage and community.
🌟 May every student continue to use their superpowers for good - in Math's and beyond!
Stagecraft and Storytelling - from Shakespeare to Puppets!
This term, our Senior Drama and English students have had a valuable opportunity to connect their classroom learning with contemporary performance-making and visual storytelling practices in collaboration with renowned theatre industry professionals.
Our Year 11 and 12 General English and Drama students stepped into the world of Shakespeare through a powerful and modern performance of Macbeth by the talented Shake & Stir Theatre Company. This contemporary adaptation offered students a modern interpretation of the text to gain a deeper understanding of the language and themes of ambition, political unrest and betrayal.
As well as experiencing the magic of a live performance, this school adaptation also gave our students a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into contemporary theatre techniques.
Our Year 9 Drama students took part in a creative, hands-on puppetry workshop led by the Dead Puppet Society, an internationally acclaimed design-led theatre company known for their innovative storytelling.
The workshop directly supports their current work on the Australian Gothic play The Riddle of Washpool Gully, and offered students a valuable insight into contemporary puppetry, storytelling and performance techniques. Using simple design elements and materials, students constructed their own 3D jointed puppets which they brought to life using taught performance and puppetry skills.
These immersive and educational experiences are a wonderful opportunity to engage students with leading artists and industry experts and extend classroom learning in a practical and creative way. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing theatre to life for our students.

Exciting News from the Humanities Department
I am pleased to announce the next European WW1 and WW2 History Trip will run from November – December 2027!
To provide a basic summary of where the tour will go, we fly to Manchester and go to York for a Viking experience. Then onto London, Paris, Normandy, Amiens, Flanders, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Rome and then home. Participants will go to many museums, visit battlefields on the Western Front, see preserved WW1 trenches, visit the sites of WW2 atrocities, go to the Palace of Versailles, stand on the beaches at Normandy, visit a number of cemeteries, see the ancient ruins in Rome and have a gladiator experience! These are just a snippet of what this tour will offer to students.
As tour participants will be exposed to things of quite a confronting nature, the tour will be open to all MMCC students who will be in Years 10,11 and 12 in 2027. Whilst this will be a wonderful opportunity for students, it must be noted that this is a busy tour, and students who attend must be able to cope easily with change, including early starts and long days, and being away from home without a parent for an extended period. Students in Years 11 and 12 will be given priority, as student numbers will be capped at 35 for this tour. Students do not have to be studying Modern History to attend the tour. However, students must have demonstrated a good approach to their education at the College and need to have proven worthy behaviour and mindsets within their approach to college life. Any students who have demonstrated repeated negative behaviours in the classroom and towards their assessment completion will not be considered. If we don’t get enough interest from Years 10,11 and 12 students, then we will offer spots to students who will be in Year 9 in 2027.
Currently, the tour is scheduled to leave towards the end of November 2027 – however, dates will be subject to change. It is a 26-day tour, and the cost for students will include almost everything – airfares, accommodation, buffet breakfasts and dinners every day, entry fees, transport etc. Participants will only need money for lunch every day and for any souvenirs they may like to purchase. There will be a few nights where we will buy our own dinner as this has been designated Xmas market shopping or city shopping time. Of course, the cost of a passport, travel insurance and tour clothing will also need to be added. Currently, this cost will be between $11,500 - $15,000. Families will be able to start paying this off in fortnightly instalments from early 2026 to ease the financial burden.
As I will be on leave in Term 4, I will hand out expression of interest/application forms to students during next week’s assembly. If your child is interested and doesn’t receive an application form, please do not hesitate to email me and I will send you one. Students need to hand write their application, and a parent signature is required. Application forms are due by Friday, 12 September (week 9) to Mrs Frame. An information evening will be held at the College in Week 4, Term 1 2026 for successful applicants. This information will be communicated to you via email early in Term 1, 2026. Mrs Frame will go through the tour in more detail, present the anticipated costs and expectations for the trip and we will hand out deposit forms. This $1000 deposit will need to be paid by the end of Term 1, 2026 to secure your child’s place on the tour. This deposit will also be non - refundable. Once you have committed to the trip, you will be responsible for all future tour costs.
If you have any further questions about the History tour, please do not hesitate to send me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
A gentle reminder to all Year 12 students entering University that scholarships are now open for most institutions.
Students seeking Apprenticeships please check your emails as we have sent out a number of opportunities in the last fortnight.
Pathways & Possibilities – Darling Downs
The Toowoomba Regional Jobs Committee (TRJC) branded as Employ Toowoomba and hosted by RDA-DDSW, in partnership with the Regional School Industry Partnership Program, is excited to invite your school community to a free upcoming event for parents, carers, and students:
This event is targeted at parents/carers and aims to provide them with information to support their child to make informed career pathway decisions, although students are also able to attend.
Industry Round Tables – parents and students can speak face-to-face with up to 3 industry areas of interest (industry reps from approx. 30 different businesses across 11 different industries)
Speakers – hear about how to maximise school options for pathways, VET and higher education
Future Workforce Insights – find out which jobs and skills are in demand locally
We would appreciate your help in sharing this event with families of students in Years 9 – 12. It's a valuable opportunity for parents (and students) to engage with local industries and better understand the opportunities available across the Darling Downs region.
Defence Industry Pathways
What is the Defence Industry?
The defence industry is made up of people, businesses and organisations that help design, build and maintain the tools and technology that protect Australia. This includes everything from submarines and aircraft to cybersecurity systems and AI.
Defence Industry vs. ADF It’s important to know that the defence industry is not the same as the Australian Defence Force (ADF). While the ADF includes the Army, Navy and Air Force - the people in uniform - the defence industry is made up of civilians and companies who support them. For example, it’s the engineers, technicians, manufacturers, cyber experts and project teams who develop and support what the ADF needs to do their job. Although they are closely related, the Defence Industry & ADF are two different career paths. (Career Tools, 2025)

A Magical Visit from Author Gregg Dreise!
Last week, our Junior School was buzzing with excitement as we welcomed the incredible Australian author, illustrator and storyteller, Gregg Dreise! From Prep to Year 6, students were captivated during a lively hour of storytelling, music and dance that celebrated the vibrant traditions of Indigenous culture.
Gregg’s energy lit up the room as he shared tales that were both heartfelt and hilarious, weaving in important messages of kindness, respect and community. With rhythmic beats and catchy songs, the performance had students clapping, singing and even dancing in their seats!
It was more than just a visit—it was a celebration of culture, creativity and connection. A truly unforgettable experience that left us all inspired and smiling.

Parent Laptop Controls
I am writing to draw your attention to a free resource that most of our community is not taking advantage of. Regularly, I am asked if there is a way to support families with device use at home. There is, and it is FREE!
The resource called Qustodio allows families to monitor use, which includes mobile phones and other devices in the home. Currently only 7% of families have activated their free version of parent controls on student laptops.
Very soon the settings in our device managing software will be changed to include a weekly email about your child’s use and a link to activate your free parent account. Please consider accessing this account to support your child to make appropriate online choices. You can also follow the details below to access this free resource.
Use the email address you have provided the school and follow the prompts to connect your child’s device to your account. You can then add other devices, and you may choose to pay for the premium version for more control of your child’s online behaviours. You can also find it through the MMCC Online Safety Hub by following these steps:
4. Scroll down to the bottom and click on "Create a free account"
This online safety hub offers information about many online traps for young people including Gaming, Social Media, Screen Time and a lot more.
If you have any questions, please contact me via email or phone the college on 07 4698 7777.

Bricks in Bloom
Build a LEGO Habitat Competition: Kids Only
Bricks in Bloom are challenging the 5-13 year olds of Toowoomba to test their LEGO design and creativity skills by building a LEGO habitat. A LEGO habitat is a small build on an 8x8 or 14x12 base. We want builders to make a habitat of their favourite place in the Darling Downs. Perhaps it’s a park, or a shop, a room in your house, or even your school! Given it is carnival of flowers, perhaps there is a place you love to visit in Toowoomba during September.
The habitats will be put on display to the public at Bricks in Bloom on Saturday, 27 September 2025. Bricks in Bloom is a LEGO fan expo held during the Toowoomba Carnival of flowers. There will be a small prize for the best habitat build in each age category. This would make a great project for the first week of school holidays!
